Jean Marie Stein has a Masters of Mathematics Education from Teachers College, Columbia University and a BS in Electrical Engineering from the University of Maryland. Over the years, she has worn many hats: NASA Engineer, Wall Street Bond Trader, Mom, Community Volunteer, NYS Certified High School Math Teacher, and Mathematics Coach, and fierce student advocate. Her most informative teachers are her husband of 32 years and her two children, ages 23 and 25. Jean Marie lived in Mamaroneck for 32 years and has been an active volunteer in the PTA, The Mamaroneck Schools Foundation and the Mamaroneck Community Nursery School. Jean Marie now resides in the Berkshires.
Jean Marie founded Thrive Tutoring in answer to the need she found in her children and students for strong study skills, time management tools, organizational strategies, and methods to reduce stress and test anxiety. Students also had little understanding of the link between nutrition, mood and cognition. Having taught in public high schools, Jean Marie knew that while the need was overwhelming, there existed no formal class to teach these skills and few subject courses allowed teachers the time to explore these topics.
As a personal one-to-one math coach for grades 7-12 for the past ten years, she sees first hand the immense stress that our local students are under. Working closely with these students, she focuses on the child's well-being first and mathematics second - guiding each child to achieve at their highest level. She incorporates strategies for time management and study techniques, but also collaborates with professionals in other fields to complete the picture and give students the tools that schools don't teach.
Thrive Tutoring is Jean Marie's dream come true. Their workshops and private lessons support all students beyond what she can provide in a one-hour math lesson. Thrive Tutoring offers students the opportunity they deserve to attain the tools they need to become happy, successful, independent, and healthy students (before heading off to the rigors and independence of college.) Jean Marie believes Thrive Tutoring will provide the missing piece - the mind and body approach to allow all students to flourish.
